Just like many other of the famous jockeys from the turn of the century, he was trained by the legendary Bill Daly. Maher began his horse racing career at the tender age of 14, as did many of the jockeys of the time. The Beginning of a Tremendous CareerÄaniel A. Maher died young of what was then called consumption, but we know as tuberculosis. He was inducted into the United States’ Racing Hall of Fame for his outstanding achievements. Daniel Aloysius Maher was an American horse racing jockey who had a highly successful thoroughbred horse racing career in the United States and in the United Kingdom, winning 26.1 percent of the U.S.horse racing events he took part in and 25 percent of those in the UK.
